13/4/12

This week's interview is Jordan West son of former Glentoran favorite David West

Q1. Can you give us a bit of info on your career so far?

I started off with ards youth when I was about 10 years old until I was the age of 16,then linfield came in for me and I played there for 2 seasons, but my heart was always set on playing for glentoran so once they came in for me I jumped at the chance.

Q2. You could be the 1st 2nd generation glentoran player in a while do you think this adds pressure on you?

No I don’t think theres any pressure added on me at all, as my dad has made me aware of the importance of playing for glentoran.

Q3. What would you say is the biggest difference between the time your dad retired and you started your career?

that the strength and depth was unbelievable from the first 11 to the second 11, and had many off full internationals

Q4. Who would you say has had the biggest influence on your career so far?

My dad as he has given me very good advice on how to deal with things on and of the football pitch.

Q5. What are your hopes for the future?

My hopes are to break into the first team squad as its my ambition as a supporter.

Q6. Have you ever had any bad injuries?

No thank goodnesss not like my dad

Q7. Do you think playing reserve football this season has helped you?

Yes it has as playing with and against experience players teaches you and gives you confidence in your own ability, also the training is a higher intensity.

Q8. What is the best piece of advice anyone has given you about football?

Ive always been told you only get out of it what you put into it.

Q9. What position do you play?

My Preferred position is centre midfield but also can play right midfield

Q10. Is there 1 player you look to for inspiration locally or globally

As my local team it would have to be colin Nixon as he is commited to glentoran for so long

This weeks interview is with Jim O'Hanlon

Q1. What player from the 1st team has had the biggest influence on you so far?
Everyone of the senior players have been very good in that way but Sean Ward has been brilliant as he is always there for advice. Colin Nixon was my room-mate in Macedonia so I got to know him well early on and he would also have a big influnce. Also Stephen Carson who is a winger like myself is always giving me tips and this is great as he is speaking from experience.
Q2. What has been your favorite moment in a Glentoran shirt so far?
Luckily, I've had many great moments in my first season in the 1st team such as playing in Windsor for my first Big-Two game and scoring the winner V Cliftonville at the Oval but it would have to be making my European debut for Glentoran in the Europa League V FK Renova.
Q3. Could you give us an insight into your career so far?
I started out playing for Donegal Celtic until u16 when Nigel Matthews who was Glentoran u17s manager contacted me to see if I would be interested in signing for the Glens. From then I've progressed through u18 and reserve level before being offered a first team contract at the start of this season.
Q4. You have become a bit of a fan favourite in your 1st season why do you think this?
I'm not sure if I could call myself a fan favourite but if the fans are taking a liking to me I think that could be down to the fact that I am always trying to beat defenders and try to be dangerous everytime I get the ball. Also they would be encouraged by the fact that I am still young and should have plenty more room for improvement.
Q5. Who has been the best player you have faced so far in your career?
It would have to be the number 9 from Vorskla Poltova who we played in the 2nd round of the Europa League. He was frightening and apparently AC Milan were interested in him.
Q6. Alot of fans are talking excitedly about Carl McComb what sort of player would you call him?
Carl is quality, he is a great striker. He's strong and can run. He will score a lot of goals wherever he plays but his drop-off and link-up play is also second to none.
Q7. If there was 1 thing you could change about your career what would it be?
I have no regrets in football and I am quite happy to be playing where I am at the minute. Maybe this season I have picked up two frustrating injuries which has hindered me a bit.
Q8. Outside of football what do like to do in your spare time?
I am finished school and was attending University in Coleraine but the travelling became too much so I dropped out. I have now applied for Jordanstown University and thankfully I have been accepted so I'll be going there from September.
Q9. Do you think working with people like Tim McCann and Stephen Carson has helped your game?
Most definitely, Tim McCann was one of the best wingers Glentoran have seen so he has been brilliant for me to recieve tips off and its a shame he is moving on. As I've said above Stephen Carson has been a big influence for me and the fact that he's still playing can also help me watch him and learn from him on the pitch, as well as speaking to him off the pitch.
Q10. What are your hopes for the future?
Every footballer has ambitions to play full-time football across the water but at the minute all I can focus on is playing for Glentoran, and I have just returned from injury this week so hopefully I can start fighting for my place in the squad and team.

30/3/12

This weeks interview is with Daniel Burns

Q1. You have just made your return from a broken leg can you tell us how the injury occurred?

My injury occurred during a league game against Carrick Rangers. It happened as I received the ball and the Carrick Rangers right back slid in for a tackle very hard catching my leg and the ball.

Q2. Can you give us an insight into your career so far?

I am a regular starting player in the reserve squad, playing left midfield week in week out. I have trained with the first team and also I have been called up for matches.

Q3. Do you think having a player like Stephen Carson at the club has/will aid your development in the future?

No. I do not think that having a player like Stephen Carson has or will aid my development in the future as I believe every player is different and has their own special skills.

Q4. What has been your proudest moment as a footballer so far?

It is tough to say, football is every special to me and every moment is a proud moment but I would have to say making my first appearance for the first team against Newry city.

Q5. Who would you rate as your toughest opponent?

When I was playing for the under 18s we played against Glenavon FC in a league match. I started left mid field and their right mid fielder was Ryan Mclaughlin a player who is now playing for Liverpool reserves week in week out. He was very different on the pitch causing us all sorts of problems, so I would have to say he has been my toughest opponent.

Q6. Who is the best player you have played with?

The best player I have ever played with is Carl McComb. I still play with him to this day and he is still by far the best player I have played with.

Q7. Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far?

This is another tough one. When I played at under 18s my manager was Russel Baird he made a massive influence on me throughout the year. Now at the reserves my manager Spike Hill has also made a massive influence on me.

Q8. If there was 1 player who you would model your game upon who would it be?

The one and only player I would model my game upon would be Lionel Messi

Q9. The Glentoran Academy seems to be coming into it's own what do you think is the biggest reason for this?

I think all the managers and coaches throughout the academy deserve great praise for their work, commitment and enthusiasm that they instil in their players.

Q10. What are your hopes for the future?

My hopes for the future are too make a great comeback not only at the reserves but also at the first team showing that I have not lost any of my confidence. I would always hope to one day become a professional footballer, playing for my country or further afield.

25/3/12

This week's interview is with Ross Davison who kindly took time out to complete the interview.

Q1. You have been on the fringes of the 1st team this season how much have you learnt?
I think i have learnt a reasonable amount from the limited first team game time I've had and just general training. Generally I've found that everything we do a reserve level just has to be lifted a level or two, but I hope to keep learning for years to come.

Q2. Could you give us an insight into your career so far?
I started off apex and played there for a few years before moving to greenisland for 3 years before getting asked to join glentoran by Nigel Matthews at under 17s level. From there I have progressed through the under18s and reserves over the years and finally getting my first team contract last year.

Q3. Do you think that you could make the breakthrough into the 1st team every week next season?
It's very hard to say, all I can do is keep my head down and work hard and hopefully play well for the reserves and if I get a chance then grab it with both hands.

Q4. What player do you look up to the most?
There are a number of players i would look up to for different reasons, but Colin Nixon would probably stand out the most. I admire a lot about his game, including the ability to read the game, his technical ability and the coolness he has on the ball. He's a great role model to have in the squad.

Q5. Who would be best player you've played against?
From the few games I've played this year the trickiest player I came up against was probably Stephen Garret of cliftonville.

Q6. Alot of the younger players seem to have alot of respect for Paul Leeman and Colin Nixon can you tell us why that is?
I think because they a both true professionals. I have played with both players and i think they are quite alike. Both players have excellent ability and communication and this gives everyone a lift when playing with them.

Q7. Would you describe yourself as an attacking or defending fullback?
I enjoy attacking, but as a defender you have a duty to defend first and foremost. So I'd say I'd be a mix of both.

Q8. If there was 1 area of your game that you could improve what would it be and why?
There always room for improvement in all areas of your game but when you step up to the firsts level your awareness on and off the ball needs to also step up, but this will come with experience.

Q9. As a member of ILS forums do you think the stick that some players have been getting is unfair?
I think that everyone has their own opinions and own views on how the game should be played, but no player makes a mistake or plays poorly on purpose. I personally don't think stick is going to help any player play any better but i think a bit of constructive criticism would be the better option, but that's my opinion.

Q10. The 2nds currently sit joint 1st in their league what do you think has been the main plus factor during the season?
I think its probably the amount of young players coming through, there's isn't a player over 20 in the general 2nds squad which is a credit to the academy.

15/3/12

Thsi weeks interview is with Reserve Goalkeeper Stephen McConnell

Q1. Can you give us an insight into your career so far? I first started out as an outfield played at a local club called bloomfield it wasn't untill one day our keeper at the time got injured so i jumped in nets for a few match's and never looked back, i then moved on to hillsborough boys, dungoyne and then linfield for just over a year and then when i wasnt enjoying my football there thats when i got speaking to my old u18 manager at the glens nigel matthews and thats when i decided that glentoran was the best move for me and iv been enjoying it here ever since.

Q2. As a Goalkeeper what is the one area of the game that annoys you most? I would personally say the most frustrating thing about being a keeper is the times that the team in front of you are not playing well and you want to get out and play but theres not a lot you can do about it except try and make sure the other team don't score.

Q3. We haven't had many goalkeepers who have been able to make the grade with us at 1st team level after coming through the different age groups why do you think this is? I think its because the first team already have an excellent goalkeeper, elliot morris is arguably the best goalkeeper in the league and for a young goalkeeper to come and challenge his place is difficult.

Q4. Who would be the best player you've faced? I would have to say Josh Carson, he was always a threat and i always hated when i was playing against him because i knew i was in for a busy day, he plays for Ipswich town and has made a few appearances for northern Ireland, he has a very bright future ahead of him.

Q5. Do you think that Goalkeepers have become more protected since the injury to Petr Cech a few years ago? I think that goalkeepers do what they do at there own risk, what happened to petr cech was very unfortunate and i do think it has raised more awareness about protecting the goalkeeper on the pitch but injuries is something that you cant really prevent for a goalkeeper or any player for that matter.

Q6. Is there 1 goalkeeper you rate above the others?  pepe reina. without a doupt the best keeper in the world.

Q7. If you could play with 1 player from Glentoran's history who would it be? i would have to say colin nixon, as a keeper there's nothing that makes your day a lot easier than having a solid defender in front of you and colin nixon is exactly that.

Q8. What sort of feedback have the reserve coaching team been giving you? great feedback so far, i'm still young and i have a long way to go if i want to be Glentorans number one but all the reserve team staff have been nothing but brilliant so far, i feel like my game has come a long way since i stepped up to reserves and i owe a lot to them for that.

Q9. Who would be the biggest influence in your career? I would have to say my nanny, since i first kicked a ball she hasn't a match is always the one giving me my lifts to the match's and training. i wouldn't be where i am today without her.

Q10. If there was 1 rule in football you could change what would it be? I don't think i would change anything about football, i enjoy playing the game as it is if i'm being honest.

10/3/12

This weeks interview is with Owen Thompson.

Q1. Do you think we can overturn the 2-0 defeat to Sligo and if so what sort of effect will the attack on the buses have on the players?
Yes I think we can , Sligo are still in pre - season and i dont think they will fancy coming to the oval . I dont think the attacks on the buses will effect any of the players. As i dont think it was true Sligo fans who carried out the attacks .
Q2. Can you tell us a bit about your career so far?
I played for Dungoyne for 3 seasons before signing for Glentoran Under17s , I have represented County Antrim at 2 Milk Cups which was a good achievement and a great experience. I broke into the reserve team at the back end of last season which topped of a good season after wining the league and cup double with the colts. This season i have played regular for Spike Hills reserve team which has been very good testing myself against experienced irish league players.
Q3. You are a boyhood Glentoran fan what would you describe as your best moment as a fan?
My best moment as fan was when we won the league in 2009 , I hope its not long before we do it again and i hope to be a part of it.
Q4. Who would be the 1 player from another IL club that you would want to play with?
Jamie Mulgrew,In my opinion he is one of the leagues best midfielders .As i know Jamie and his family outside of football i know he conducts himself very well and works hard. Its a pity he is not a Glentoran player.
Q5. The last 5-6 years have been quite lean in terms of success as a fan and player does this make you hungrier to achieve success at Glentoran?
Its always been an ambition of mine to play for Glentorans 1st when i signed for the club 3 seasons ago. Im sure with the new manager next season successful days will return to the Oval and fingers crossed i can be part of it.
Q6. What player if any do you base your game on?
I dont base my game on any particular player , as a full back i would watch the likes of Kyle Walker for Spurs who trys to get forward as much as possible but also strong defensively .Locally i think my playing style is similar to Mark Glendinings and hopefully i can be as successful as him.
Q7. What sort of impact has Eddie Patterson had so far on the entire 1st and Reserve teams?
I cant really answer this becasue i havent met him yet but I know hes been at a few reserve games which shows he is taking an interest in young players coming through the club.
Q8. If there was 1 player from Glentoran's past you could play with who would you choose?
Mark Glendining due to his attitude on and of the pitch and how good of a player he was and his wining attitude towards the game. As I have played 5 aside with him he still has the same hunger to win which you need with all your players if you want to be succsesful .
Q9. What would you describe as your strongest position on the pitch?
Right back, I started playing it at the end of last season for the colts after playing centre back through out my career .I enjoy playing Right back because I am more involved with the play at both ends of the pitch and i enjoy getting forward as much as I can.

Q10. Is there any 1 player at Glentoran you look up to more than the others? It would have to be Colin Nixon for his achievements and the way he leads the team and is a true Glenman and in my eyes has been the best player this season for the first team.

2/3/12

This is the 2nd in a series of nterviews. This week's interview is with Samuel Mcilveen.

Q1. What are your hopes for the future? To keep working hard and play football at the highest level I can. I've always supported the Glens so I hope my future is here.

Q2. With all the good news released by the club last week do you think the new ground give the players more motivation to do The Oval proud before we leave? I think it was news everyone was waiting for a long time now. Its definately a challenge for the players. Hopefully there will be a few more trophies in the trophy cabinet at the Oval before 2016.

Q3. You are from outside Belfast could you tell us abit about your previous clubs and how you came to the attention of the glens?
I played for Carniny Youth, a local team in Ballymena, we played against the Glens in the South Belfast youth league, so I guess that's when I was noticed, I was approached by Nigel Matthews and I was told he had been monitoring my progress for a while, having supporting the Glens all my life, I only wanted to sign for one team. I owe a lot to Nigel, he's big a big help to me.

Q4. Your position is one of the most important in any team how would you describe yourself as a player? Tough one for me to say, I'd describe myself as a defensive midfielder, I like to get stuck in and break things up and get on the ball as much as possible.

Q5. What player from the 1st team at the minute would you see as the perfect role model to base your game on? Colin Nixon, to make so many appearances for Glentoran is unbelievable, and his
consistency every week on the pitch

Q6 If there was one player who you could play with from Glentoran's past who would it be and why? From watching the Glens as a kid, from my time it would be Michael O'neill. The treble winning season in 2003 he was outstanding. Being a midfielder myself, Darren Lockhart would be up there as well.

Q7. What do you rate of your chances of getting into the 1st team in the 18 months? Only time will tell, I'm still young so I have to be patient, hopefully I can get a chance to impress the new manager.

Q8. Everyone of us as fans are really excited at the academy we have at the minute how much have the coaches helped you? Their is a lot of good coaches at the club, it has showed with so many of the young players breaking through to the first team. Rodney Hazley, Gary Smyth, Chris Walker and Nigel Law have all been a big help to me. Also Spike Hill as he's brought me up from the Colts to the reserves this season, he gave me the opportunity to step up and prove myself, I really can't thank them all enough.

Q9. Who has been the biggest influence in your career to date? My mum and dad have been a massive help to me, without their support I wouldn't be where I am today.

Q10. What footballer from outside Northern Ireland do you admire the most and why? Being a Man United fan, it has to be Paul Scholes.... Different class

27/2/2012

This interview is the 1st of 2 this week and will give us an insight into the younger plyers at the glens. The 1st player interviewed is John McGuigan

Q1. Every supporter of Glentoran has dreamt of playing for them at some point. As a young player with alot of potential where do you see yourself in the future?

I'm hoping in the next year or two that i can become a first team regular because I've been in and round it this season and its somewhere i want to be at a permanent basics, i know its going to be hard work but if that what it takes so be it, you have to work hard for the things you want because they aren't just going to come to you.

Q2.Who would you say has been the biggest influence so far in your career?

I would say my uncle and parents. Every sunday to this day I've went to my grannies for sunday dinner with the family and when i was about 6 for year my uncle used to take me to the park after my grannies to kick the ball about and should be a few things he also bought me my first pair of football boots, I would say he's help me become the player i am today. My parents because if they hadn't of been about i wouldn't of been able to make it to all my training sessions/matches over the years and if they hadn't of bought me the equipment i need then i wouldn't of been able to play so i thank them for that.

Q3. What would you describe as the best moment in your career so far?

I'm not to sure about this one but I've had a good few moments in my career so far for example I've played in europe at the age of 17, Ive scored against england, Ive Played in the milk cup and also played for Northern Ireland 18s school boy and full 19s squad against Switzerland. but playing in europe in europe at such a young age would be my best moment up to date.

Q4. We all know that the 1st team hasn't had the best of seasons whilst the 2nds are flying in the reserve league what do you see as the main reason for this?

I've been involved with the 2nds more this season as you no and the manager (Spike Hill) encourages us to play the ball on the deck and to be clinical in front of goal by taking are chances and battle and defend as a team. i haven't played or been involved in a lot of first team action to actually comment on that but i know in training that our former manager (Scott Young) did want us to play on the deck we did a lot of drills in training of keeping the ball on the deck.

Q5.If there was 1 player from Glentoran history that you could play with who would it be?

Paul leeman, I played with paul a few times at the reserves when he was coming back from his injury last year he's a great player and an absolute gentleman. When ever someone made a mistake he would just encourage them and never get on there case thats what you need from a leader and he certainly was a great leader.

Q6.Young players in the league in the last 3-4 players have impressed alot what do you think is the main reason we are seeing so many exciting young players coming through the league?

I would say its because everyone knows theres not a lot of money in the clubs at the moment and they need to produce and get the best young exciting players into there first time at a young age because they haven't got the money to go out and buy the players they want. for example myself when i was 15 i played my first reserve game i was so nervous i was scared to get on the ball but now at reserves i feel like so calm and collected i believe thats because I've been in and around the reserve team for good wee while and thats what it should be like for the first team.

Q7. You have been picked in the U18 squad for the Centenary Shield. How big of a learning curve is that for you?

I also played in the centenary shield last year it learned me so much about international football, that if you make mistakes you will be punished because your also coming up against the best players in the country at there age level so they wouldn't be picked if they weren't good players. I think I've also came on as a player from the last campaign were we shared it with scotland and in my opinion should of won it.

Q8. Are there any players in the reserve squad that you think could become 1st team regulars on the future?

I would say theres 3 or 4 that could possibly step up into the first team as you've seen Colum Curtis as came up this year against shamrock rover. theres also a player called Carl McComb centre forward at the moment and think he should be giving the chance sometime should he's a great player and scores goals.

9/2/2012

So we finally signed Leon Knight only to then be told he's banned for 3 games.

This Saturday sees us kick off our Setanta Cup campaign away to Bray hopefully we get the win but either way we'll all enjoy the journey

18/1/2012

1st game of the post Scott Young era was played last night away against Ballymena. In what many people are saying what was our best performance so far this season we swept past them thanks to goals from Nicky,Andy Waterworth and Sean Ward all in all a very satisfying win and hopefully we can carry this form over into the rest of this season

15/1/2012

Following yesterday's defeat to Newington in the Irish Cup the board have released this statement.

Scott tendered his resignation to Chairman Terence Brannigan this afternoon and, at a meeting of the Board of Directors of Glentoran this evening, the Board formally voted to accept Scott’s resignation.
The Board wish to place on record it’s sincere thanks to Scott for his service to the club as an outstanding player, a dedicated coach and a totally committed manager.
Chairman Terence Brannigan said “Since my arrival at this great club a year ago Scott Young has given me unstinting support and this is a very sad day for me and for Scott.
Scott has displayed a passion and love for this club since he first joined it nearly 15 years ago and, in leaving us, I would wish him to be remembered for his professional integrity and for the part he played in the successes enjoyed by the club during his period with us, including leading us to last season’s County Antrim Shield triumph and to our most successful foray into Europe in years.”
The process of recruiting a new manager to replace Scott Young will begin immediately but, in the interim period, the team will be managed by Director of Football, Roy Coyle.
Chairman, Terence Brannigan, stated “During this difficult time we are fortunate to have someone of Roy Coyle’s experience and stature to step into the breach and I am certain that Roy will enjoy the confidence and support of everyone associated with our club - supporters, players, coaches, officials and Directors.”

10/11/2012

Very tough game against the ports last Saturday ended with us  getting a well deserved point. 1st Half we played some of our best football this season and really should have been 3-1 up at halftime however Waterworth missed his penalty and Darren Boyce was incorrectly ruled offside from a goalkick which resulted in a bounce ball somehow. All roads lead to the Oval this Saturday for the Irish Cup Round 5 which starts with a very tricky fixture against Newington YC.

We have also booked La Mon hotel for our 20th Anniversary for 27th February 2013. Single rooms are priced at 65 pound and double rooms are 75 while tickets are 35 pound

4/1/2012

just to update the service for paul will be at Roselawn tomorrow at 2pm and not 12 as first thought

2/1/2012

Paul Blakeley will be cremated this thursday at 12.00 at Roselawn Crematorium.

1/1/2012

Following another post-linfield defeat yesterday I think it's clear for all to see that alot of serious work needs to be done in order for us to be in Europe next season. The only realistic way we can qualify for Europe next season is by winning the Irish Cup but if that were to happen there is a good chance that we could be stuck with an inexperienced manager who should never have been given the job in the 1st place and has paid for it ever since he accepted the offer. Scott Young was one of our finest midfielders in the last 20 years yet any chance of him being fondly remembered is sinking very quickly. It is time for the board to step up and tell SY what they expect of him and the team in the next 3 months and if he doesn't match the expectations than he should leave before things get any worse for our club with attendances and team performance rapidly declining we need to bring in a manager that has no history with our club and wouldn't be afraid of getting rid of all the deadwood we have that are currently besmirching the name of glentoran.

30/12/2011

The Chairman and fellow members of NDGSC offers it's deepest sympathy to the family of ex NDGSC member Paul Blakely(known as Brown Umbro) who has sadly passed away suddenly. May he Rest In Peace

27/12/2011

So we beat the scum for the 3RD TIME this season after a deserved 1-0 win courtesy of Darren Boyce and his 77th minute winner. We also unfurled our new club flag at the ground yesterday and everyone seems to be very impressed with it. Next saturday sees us travel to Dungannon so let's hope we can do something we haven't done so far this season and win the next game after beating the bloos.

24/12/2011

Merry Christmas to all our club members and their families and friends. Here's hoping we have a Boxing Day win to it all off. We would also like to thank Janice Craig for helping us out with the new club flag that you will see on Boxing Day for the 1st time

13/12/11

Yet another lacklustre performance on Saturday against Portadown resulted in a 2-0 defeat. We will be running a bus to the game at ballymena on Saturday and are looking forward to our Christmas lunch with members of the Carryduff SC and therefore the bus will be leaving the Railway Bar at 10.40am

4/12/11

3 games and 3 very disappointing results and performances all starting off with the league game at cliftonville. In the the 1st 45 mins we were the much better team but for some reason we just didn't turn up in the 2nd half and deserved to lose even though it was an unfortunate own goal. Onto Tuesday night and the CAS final the less said about that game the better three words that describe the performance would be Inept, soulless and abysmal. Onto yesterday's home game against Lisburn and yet again even though we went a goal up we couldn't push on and were very lucky to get anything from the game another awful performance at home. Improvements will need to be made if we want to get anything out of next weekend's home game against the ports

22/11/11

Back to winning ways on saturday at home with a 2-0 victory over glenavon good peformance by the younger players.

We have a pool tournament on friday night with a £5 entry fee all welcome.

Club members are expected to be at the Railway Bar for 7.30 for a club meeting

18/11/11

Incredibly awful performance on Wednesday night saw us eliminated from the league cup. Tomorrow sees us play Glenavon at home here's hoping this is the game where we can actually start performing against the lesser teams at home.

15/11/11

Very tough game tomorrow night against a good coleraine team. We will need to be at our absolute best if we are to win this game and make it to the semi-finals.

13/11/11

Very disappointing result yesterday only 3 days after beating the bloos 2-0 we immediately conceded ground on the top 2 after drawing 3-3 against Carrick Rangers. A much better performance will be needed against Coleraine on Wednesday if we are to make the semi-finals of the league cup

10/11/11

What a fantastic performance by the Glens last nyt. Every single Glentoran player should feel proud of themselves after a great win over linfailed. 2-0 and we weren't even at our best which just shows that if we had of been at our best we could have scored at least 4-5 goals easily.

7/11/11

Slightly disappointing result against the crues on saturday that wasn't helped by an incompetent referee and a injury that probably rules Gary Hamilton out of the Big 2 game on Wednesday night in what could be a vitally important game in terms of the rest of the season and where we go in terms of the league and if we have enough confidence to give the scum a run for their money in for the league.

30/10/11

Very comfortable win yesterday against DC by 4 goals however we weren't at ou our best which makes you realise how far we have came in the last month or so that even though we won 4-0 we still could have moved up 2-3 gears and scored another 5-6 in what was a physhical encounter at times. The next 2 games could tell us alot more about our season as we play the crues and bloos at home in a 3 day period both games will be very tough and hopefully entertaining matches

27/10/11

We will be playing Cliftonville in the CAS final after we beat Lisburn 5-1 and Cliftonville beat the scum 6-2 last nyt. So much for the clean sweep this season ain't that right DJ

25/1011

2 brilliant results away from home in a row after beating the ports in the league cup game at home. I'll start off by saying a bit about the deplorable actions of a few "portadown" fans thar decided to tarnish every other fan of their club after they threw fireworks onto the pitch 3 weeks ago this is an incident that will never be forgotten by anyone that was at the game. The 5-0 win over Lisburn was impressive however it was nothing compared to the way we played against Dungannon at the weekend. We got the ball down moved it quickly and passed it well all in all this was a performance that has got a few of the younger glentoran fans excited as very few have seen football like this in the last 5-6 years. We play Lisburn away again tonight in the CAS SF in a 7.45 ko.

 6/9/11

Tomorrow night sees the return of the most useless trophy for senior teams but if we win it it's a bit of silverware in the oval so we won't be complaining. We kick off the CAS campaign againstCarrick Rangers tomorrow night at THE OVAL. This game could be used as a chance for some of our young promising players to show what they can do against IL opposition.

3/9/11

Just to let you all know that this is our facebook page which is run brilliantly by our very own Suzi Rea

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/profile.php?id=100002901141597

 31/8/11

So last night's game ended in a 1-1 draw which is the least we could have hoped for but if we are honest about it if we don't start winning league games at home we will be lucky top finish in the top 3 this season. Up until 4-5 years ago teams hated coming to the Oval and we really need to put that fear back into them again otherwise teams will keep on thinking that playing us at home is easier than playing us at their ground. Also looks like Sean Ward picked up a bad injury and might miss saturday's home game against Cliftonville.

29/8/11

Ok following Saturday's historic victory at windsewer park we have a very tough home game against Coleraine. If we can play the way we did for much of saturday there is no reason why we shouldn't win tomorrow night. This week could also be the turning point in our season if we can record 2 wins out of 2 at home it will give us fans something to really cheer about at the oval as we have faced some of the best teams in the opening 4 weeks of this season so hopefully we can continue to pick up points every week.

 21/8/11

First defeat of the season came yesterday againt DC. Not the start to the week we all had considering we will be away to the bloos next week however we were missing arguably our most important defender in the shape of Nicky however to have a player sent off didn't really help but on the plus side Martyn and Hamilton both came on and done ok on their first game of the season. I will post up the times of the bus to the bloos game next saturday as soon as I have them.

16/8/11

I am pleased to announce that this weekend I will be providing live updates of the glens game against Donegal Celtic if possible I will do live updates of at least 2 or 3 more home games this season. With SY saying that Gary Hamilton and Ciaran Martyn could be back for the bloos game on the 27th alot of fans are hoping they can keep fit and come into the team when they are needed and show the fans what they can do on the pitch. The first update on Saturday will be online from about 14.30 with a brief preview and then team lineups.

14/8/11

First home game of the leaue season has come and gone. Yesterday's game wasn't as good as we hoped it would be but we took the win although we did make it hard for ourselves in the 2nd half. If we are to push for a top 2 spot we will need to improve our finishing and also show a bit more fight in midfield but our defence has been good enough so far. 2 Belfast derbies coming up in the next 2 weeks both of which will be very tough but we will hopefully be able to keep all the players fighting fit for both games.

10/8/11

With 3 days left until the first league home game of the season against Dungannon Swifts there is a positive mood among the fans following Saturday's great win against Crusaders however we will need to keep on attacking after we score a goal instead of sitting back at times and inviting times to shoot from anywhere near our box. The next 2 games against the swifts and DC at home will however be nothing compared to the test we face against the bloos at windsewer at the end of the month but if we can get used to passing the ball on the deck then we could easily win alot of our matches this season.

7/8/11

First league game of the season and what a match it was very tense and entertaining made all the better thanks to Boycie's last minute winner made all the sweeter due to a absolutely inept performance by Mark Courtney constantly giving free-kicks to the crues for no reason when glens players were being fouled. All in all I think this could be a very hard season for us due to the size of our squad however what it lacks in size it make up for in quality.

2/8/11

We will be running a bus to the game on Saturday we will be leaving the Railway Bar at 1.30pm we will then be picking up at The Elk at 1.40 and then The Longfellow. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT WE CANNO DRINK ON AWAY BUSES THIS SEASON THANKS TO DAVID FORD AND HIS NEW LAW.Glentoran supporters are asked to enter the ground via turnstiles T1 & T2 which are at the Creations side of the ground directly beside the traffic lights on the Shore Road outside the ground. They are also asked to enter turnstiles T3 &T4 which are at the other end of the new stand on the Shore Road also.

Ok so Saturday is the 1st game of the new league season and it promses to be a very tough opening match against Crusaders. However if we can play the way we did in Europe there is no reason why we can't win this game. Another piece of news from the club is that Gary Hamilton has agreed to take a wage-cut and is now back in the 1st team squad. In all honesty this could be one of the toughest league seasons for a while with the scum getting Patterson on loan whilst Crusaders got Leeper along with Timmy Adamson and have managed to keep Dallas and Owens. Whilst we have a very young bunch of players they have shown how good they are in pre-season while Stephen Carson and Darren Boyce have also impressed as has Aidan O'Kane although he will miss the first 6 weeks of the season through injury.

20/7/11

Been a while since the site was updated but I'm sure everyone was pleased with our performance against Vorskla last Thursday night even though we lost we had our moments and were unlucky not to score. If I find any links on the internet for the away leg tomorrow night I will post them up on here. Slowly counting down the days to the league starts and what a game it should be against crusaders. COYG

13/7/11

Hope everyone had a safe 12th day. Tomorrow sees the biggest game in Belfast for years as the Glens take on Vorskla in the 2nd qualfying round for the Europa League. Scott Young has admitted that we face a much bigger test tomorrow than we did in the last round add in the fact that we are down to the bare bones and you can understand that we are massive underdogs. Also come along to the game tomorrow night as it will be Matty Burrows last game for the Glens as he is moving over to Spain. You will always be remebred for that goal and the numerous others you scored Matty. I'm sure every glenman will join me in wishing you the best for the future.

7/7/11

WE DONE IT. Congrats to the lads on a fantastic win against FK Renova that gets us through to the 2nd qualifying round which begins next week. The game went down to pens but tbh the 2 goals we scored could have won any game the first was from Clarkie and was a great goal but the 2nd goal by Marty Murray was out of this world comparisions are already being made with Walker's goal in 95. COYG COYG the entire team done us proud and more importantly made East Belfast and the rest of the country proud

5/7/11

Sorry for the lack of updates since last week. So we got our Europa League campain underway and were very unlucky to walk from it with a 2-1 defeat mainly thanks to one of the worst referee performances by the polish ref, anyway that was last week and in all honesty we could win this game and tie on Thursday night so let's get behind the players from the 1st whistle to the last even if we aren't winning. Remember it only takes a second to score  a goal. COYG

The fixtures for next season are now in the fixtures page

26/6/11

The Glens had their last game yesterday winning 3-1 at The Oval against Bangor before facing Renova on Thursday there was a injury to Jimmy Callacher that rules him ot of both legs with a broken toe and leaves s a bit light in midfield but we can still get something from the 1st leg

25/6/11

Here is the full set of fixtures for Glentoran for 2011/12 league campaign.

20/6/2011

We have been drawn against Renova of Macedonia in the 1st qualifying round while we could face a trip to Ukraine if we got past the 1st round overall a bad draw for us in terms of travel but in all honesty we could beat both of these teams if we play the way we can.

If yiu click on this link tomorrow you should be able to watch the draw for Europe live

18/6/2011

The Glens opened their pre-season today with a deserved 1-1 draw away to Finn Harps. Matty Burrows scored a penalty following a good run from Jimmy Callacher. The younger players got a run out for 2nd half and looked lively while Tim McCann came on for 10-15 mins and almost scored. Our next match is next weekend against TNS at the Oval. The draw for Europe is on Monday so here's hoping we get a big name or a team slightly closer to home as soon as the draw is made I will be posting the details on this site however we probably won't know where the 1st leg will be until Wednesday or Thursday.

15/6/2011

Congratulations to NDGSC member Ian Parkinson and his wife on the news that she is expecting a baby in January. I'm sure everyone at the club wishes the two of them the best.

14/6/2011

For those fans that are unable to get to the friendly I will  be posting a report of the game on Saturday Night. We hae also confirmed friendlies against TNS, Larne and Dundela hopefully with more TBA. I would also like to take this moment to wish Leeper all the best at Crusaders.

4/6/2011

News from the Oval yesterday that 8 Youth Players have been given 2 year professional deals the players are Kyle Cherry,Calum Birney,Martin Murray, Jim O' Hanlon,John McGuigan,Owain Beggs,Mattie Johnson and Ross Davison of these 8 players 6 of them will be able to play for the Colts a BIG well done to the Academy system for bringing players through.

The first of our pre-season fixtures will take place on Saturday 18th June when Glentoran will travel to Finn Park in Ballybofey to face Finn Harps (ko 3pm). The following Saturday (25th June) Glentoran will entertain fellow Europa League qualifiers, TNS of Wales. This game will kick-off at 12 noon at the Oval. The club are also in discussions with several other teams and further announcements will be made on glentoran.com when these have been finalised.

24/5/2011

Couple of pieces of great news coming out of the oval yesterday

Glentoran striker Andy Waterworth today signed a new two year contract with a years option.
Following discussions last week with Manager Scott Young Andy agreed to a very substantial pay cut to remain at the club. Andy completed the formalities at the club this morning, rebuffing interest from several Irish Premier league clubs. Speaking to Glentoran.com, as he penned his new deal, Andy explained, "I never wanted to play anywhere else, I love it here."
Great to have Andy back on board

17/5/2011

Let me be one of the first people to welcome Aidan O'Kane and Aaron Hogg to the Oval. It seems that Aidan has had the sense to the scum and play for a proper team here's hoping he has a good career at the glens. Aaron Hogg has also signed and is one of the best young keepers in the league so here's hopinh both players are with us for a while.

14/5/2011

Just to let you all know that Paul Irwin who helps out with the Prediction League is recovering after his surgery. We all look forward to seeing you next season down in Ballymena.

13/5/2011

Former striker Darren Boyce is set to return to the Oval.

Darren has signed a pre-contract agreement and will join the club on a three year deal.
Darren originally joined the Glens in January 2008 but re-joined Coleraine a year later due to a lack of first team appearances.
Welcome back to Glentoran Darren. Here's hoping he has a better time with us now then he did when he first joined us. Welcome Back Darren

Daryl Fordyce
Following the midweek player meetings and subsequent releases the club were in negotiations with Daryl Fordyce re extending his contract. The club are disappointed to learn that the player has informed the Manager that he has agreed terms with Linfield FC.
Accordordingly the club have retracted any contract offers and the player will be released immediately

Good riddance at least this means that we could sign a couple more players

12/5/2011

The following players have been released:
James Taylor, Grant Gardiner, Neal Gawley, Johnny Black and Peter Steele.
Manager, Scott Young, and his backroom staff would like to place on record their thanks to all the released players for their contribution during their time at the club.

The following players have agreed new one year contracts:
Colin Nixon, Jason Hill and Jamie McGovern I'm sure that we hope the players we releasee go on to a good career with their next club. Here's hoping there are a few new players on the way.

11/5/2011

I think it's afe to say that everyone has now heard the news that Paul Leeman has been released by Glentoran. I think every supporter of Irish League Clubs will pay testament to Leeper as he is, was and always will be a Legend of Irish League Football but to us Glentoran fans there will never be anyone like him in the future unless another Leeman makes the grade at The Oval. So thanks for all the memories you have given to us the fans. PAUL LEEMAN GLENTORAN LEGEND

26/4/2011

The following is a statement from the Chairman of Glentoran FC that was printed in the Gazette

This is the first time that many of you will have heard from me, or even heard of me, and there may be those who feel that some form of communication from the new Glentoran Chairman is long overdue. However, my father wisely told me that you shouldn't talk until and unless you have something useful to say!

After around 3 months now, working with my colleagues on your Board, watching and supporting our team, talking to our Manager, Scott Young, and our Director of Football, Roy Coyle, and talking and listening to you and your fellow supporters, I believe that I now might have something to say - but, whether that proves useful or not I'll leave to you to judge!

Since coming to the club many people have spoken passionately to me of the great history and heritage of this club, it's importance as an East Belfast icon and it's part at the very heart of our community. All of this is true but, we would be fooling ourselves if we were to think that today Glentoran continues to play as large a part in our community as it once did. If we are to regain that position of prominence, both on and off the field, there is much that we must do and today I wish to share with you the vision that your Board and I have of the future of our club, Glentoran.

Our Vision:
To create a club that has a long-term stable and sustainable future and which is attractive and welcoming to a large and growing support drawn from all sections of our community . To have a club that is recognised as a relevant and valuable community asset . To build a new stadium, in the heart of East Belfast, that is fit-for-purpose, that is worthy of the name of Glentoran and that is an amenity which adds value to our community and is accessible to all . To create a football team that is recognised as the leading sports team across the island of Ireland and which becomes famous for it's sustained sporting excellence

Is it possible for us to deliver on this vision? YES. Will it be challenging? - MOST CERTAINLY.

I need hardly tell you that the club has come through an extremely difficult time and we are not yet where we wish to be. However, we have had magnificent help and support from many influential quarters and will continue to do so.

That help and support has given us time to take stock and to plan for the future. However, in doing so, we must give recognition to the many individuals and organisations who have given so much to our club in recent times - without their input our club would not have survived. In no particular order:

The many unpaid volunteers who have given of their time and energy, including Ruth and her team in our shop and Margaret and John Stewart in the Half 'n' Half . The Glentoran Community Trust for their valuable interaction with our local community and politicians and for the lead that they have taken regarding our ground redevelopment . The Spirit of '41 for their huge fundraising efforts . The 1923 Committee for our multi award winning Glentoran Gazette . The Foundation for the money that they have raised and continue to raise . The Internet GSC for their continued financial assistance . Glentoran TV for a media service that many full-time clubs envy and fail to come near . To the many Glentoran Supporters Clubs, large and small for their donations over the last couple of years . The staff and management of the club who, despite the severe difficulties, continued to serve the club professionally and well

I wish also to pay tribute to my colleagues on the Board and to their predecessors - these are people who have given much, with little in return.

Most especially, on behalf of everyone who holds this club dear, I wish to thank our anonymous donor and those who encouraged him in his generosity - without that generosity this great club would no longer exist.

For those who have not received a mention, please accept my apologies and my thanks for all of your support and help.

To all of you, our loyal and at times long-suffering fans, stick with us - we will prevail.

After signing Stephen Carson from coleraine we have been linked quite a bit with Darren Boyce

16/4/2011

Ok today's game has finished and with it any chance we had of winning the league after a very unlucky 2-1 defeat to the scum. If I am being honest weare lucky that we didn't have another crowd riot with the players of linfailed celebrated at the final whistle in front of the home fans. As much as I don't want to ramble on about the game Robert Garrett and Winkie Murphy should have been sent off for basically attacking our goalkeeper.

13/4/2011

Just to let you know folks that the Glentoran AGM is on 3rd May 2011 at 7.30pm and is being held in the Park Avenue Hotel. Another game against the scum on Saturday at the Oval and I think we all know that if we win we are in with an outside chance of winning the league so let's get at them from the off and ruin their league challenge like they ended our Irish cup hopes.

10/4/2011

After Saturday's unlucky defeat to the scum in a game in which we had numerous chances and took even 3 of them we would have won the game with ease. However we need to start thinking about the 2 league games we have against them from which we would probably need 4 points from to keep anybody from linfailed winning the league. The allocation for this weekend's game at the Oval is only 3000 so get ur tickets fast before they sell outl

UPDATE

North Down GSC are holding a CRISIS MEETING on Monday 13th December at 7:30pm at the Railway Bar in Newtownards. All members are requested to attend and any new members are welcome.

Today, Glentoran released a statement regarding our court case with HMRC.

Statement
Since HMRC served a Winding-up Petition on the Club last month, the Board of the Club have been working with expert corporate and financial advisors to resolve the outstanding issues and ensure the future survival of Glentoran Football Club.
Our legal representatives have today successfully obtained an adjournment to that legal procedure. This is the first step in a process that will, we trust, lead to a satisfactory outcome for all stakeholders and supporters early in the New Year.
Once again we, the Board, would like to thank all of the Clubs supporters for their continued support and forbearance through these exceptionally difficult times.
No further comment will be issued at this stage

06/12/2010

It has come to the time that all Irish League supporters stand up in unity together against the morons in H&S that are ruining our game. The latest decison to restrict the capacity for Boxing Days big Two game with the 4,500 and the Glens only 2,500 tickets is a complete disgrace. The thoughts of only 2,500 glenmen in a stand that holds close to 7,000 fans is just bizzare. It is time for everyone to contact H&S asking them to explain the reasoning behind this complete farce. They should not be allowed to stand behind the Stadia Act any longer. Get emailing now and get emailing often. Like on the Irish League Forums lets get an orchestrated campaign going. To email them send an email to safety@belfastcity.gov.uk

"LETTER SENT TO EAST BELFAST POLITICIANS

Dear all

I am writing to you all in the hope that as you all represent the East of Belfast that you may be able to help our beleaguered fans.

As you all our aware Glentoran are facing the biggest crisis in our history since Hitler bombed us in 1941.

This season has seen Health and Safety restriction imposed on all Irish League clubs hit all the clubs financially. We have seen brand new stands at the likes of Solitude, Shamrock Park and the Ballymena Showgrounds. We have also seen these wonderful stands automatically cut in capacity. We have also seen the draconian restrictions at the likes of The Oval, Windsor and Seaview to name a few.

This week has hit a new low in the life of an Irish League Fan and especially Glentoran and Linfield fans.

Boxing day see's the traditional Big Two Festival derby with Glentoran being given a mere 2,500 tickets for a stand that holds 7,000 people.

The Festive match for me was always family day out, even the younger sisters and mother went to these games and many Glenmen also do the same. Fans decked out in the new Christmas clothes, families by the score are in attendance, even the elderly fans who no longer go to the matches turn up for this match.

In one clean sweep this season this will no longer be available no longer. I am now living in England but had planned to come to over with the inlaws, my wife and son with all of us taking in the match. I also know of 4 other exiles so to speak planning to go to the game or should that be where planning to go to the game.

H&S safety are blaming the clubs on the tickets allocation and the clubs are blaming H&S, but yet it us, the fans who are missing out on this biggest match of the season.

Surely it is time for the politicians to come to the rescue and help the fans. It is afteral the fans who vote you into power and it is our hard earned taxes that pay your jobs. All us fans, and that is every Irish League Fans and not just Glenmen who are fed up with this fiasco of Health and Safety.

It's ok to have close to 15,000 at an International match but only half that at an Irish League game.

It's ok to have a beer tent in the city hall with hundreds packed in it unable to move, but at an Irish League match you have to have a metre squared of space between fans.

It's ok for politicans to stand side by side on stormonts steps, but an irish league fan can not stand on terracing at Irish league games without draconian measures.

I could go on an on with examples but that doesn't help our cause.

Irish League Football is a part time sport played in a small part of the United Kingdom. The Oval is not Old trafford, Windsor is not Wembley, Seaview is not Anfield. We do not have tens of thousands at our matches and the sooner politicians and moreso Health and Safety realise this the better.

On behalf of every irish league fan and especially Glenmen atm please could one of you take up the fight to help save Irish League Football, because if you dont crowds will get less, clubs will lose more money and clubs will end up on the brink of existence.

I look forward to your response

Kind Regards

Cliftonville 0- 2 GLENTORAN

Glentoran are through to the semi-final of the CIS Cup after a well deserved win at Solitude. Goals from the goal machine that is Matty Burrows and Jonny Taylor where enough to put the semi.

Linfield 1 - 3 GLENTORAN

The first trophy of the season ends up at The Oval after a superb win at Windsor Park. In a match that Glentoran deserved to win the team showed passion and committment of Glentoran teams of the past. Goals by Andy Waterworth (penalty) Matty (Goals Galore) Burrowa and Grant Gardiner clinched the win for the Glens.

Poor David Jeffrey in his after match interview in which the Blues dominated, Glens only had 3 shots the whole match, blah blah blah  What a prick of the highest order.

Fri 26th Nov

Glentoran FC - Statement from Board of Directors
Statement Issued by the Board of Glentoran Football Club in response to the Notice which appeared today in Stubbs Gazette
The Board of Glentoran Football Club were surprised and disappointed to learn today of the intention of HM Revenue and Customs to seek a "winding - up" petition for the Club.
The Club has been only too aware of its deepening difficulties and has been addressing these vigorously for some time taking expert advice from several quarters including supporters of the Club prominent in business. As a result a plan to save the Club has been prepared for consideration by the Board within the next few days.
Should the plan referred to be accepted by the Board, it is expected that a solution will be agreed with HMRC very soon afterwards.

HMRC has been kept informed of these developments and that being so, the Board is dismayed at HMRC's precipitate action.

Glentoran Football Club is fully aware of its responsibilities to its loyal following and of its significant position and role within the community of East Belfast and indeed Northern Ireland at large. The Club is determined to survive and prosper both on and off the field and would thank unreservedly its wide family of supporters for their continuing interest and encouragement.

What a woeful performance on Saturday as we went down 2-0 to Dungannon Swifts at home. the Swifts scored two goals in the space of four minutes. The biggest surprise of the day was the inform Matty Burrows being dropped to the bench.

The official site is under new management. A massive thank you to Mark from Glentoran TV who has decided that he shall host and update the site all at his own cost. North Down GSC would like to praise Mark for doing this and wish him all the very best with it. If the site is half as good as Glentoran TV it will be a fantastic success.

Last Night Glentoran defeated Coleraine at The Showgrounds by two goals to one. Glentoran went down to an early goal by Kyle McVeigh on the nine minute mark after Leon Knight had out jumped defender Colin Nixon. Glentorans equaliser came after unselfish work by Andy Waterworth set up Richard clarke to fire home from close range. The Glens winning goal was scored by Jonny Black 18 minutes from time with a volley after being set up by Peter Steele though Davy Hare really should have done better. Paul Leeman made a injury time clearance off the line to ensure that the team secured all 3 points. Next up is Dungannon Swifts at the Oval on Saturday.
